Concept

Sequences 2011 will present a spectrum of performances, happenings, discussions and lectures. The festival will be held for the fifth time in April 2011 and will continue its main objective: to focus on performances and time-based art in the Nordic countries and researching the boundaries of the genre, the artistic space, the society and how these elements interact.

The main focal point is to take a look at the sociological connections between performance in the spear of visual arts, its objective surroundings and to investigate how these factors affect each other. The aim is to draw attention to diverse approaches of artists working in the field of performance and time-based arts in the Nordic countries and Europe at large.

In addition the board wants to create a platform for discussion on the traits and challenges that characterize the field of time-based arts. This will be done through a series of artist talks and lectures during the festival. Speakers include participating artists and other invited speakers. Partners with Sequences 2011 in the discussion platform and lectures series is Iceland Academy of the Arts.

Honorary artist

Hannes Lárusson

Hannes Lárusson (b. 1955) is one of Iceland’s most important performance artists, an instigator of vigorous polemics on art and the author of complex installations where the ideology of art is pitted against popular views and traditional values. For years, he has as an artist and writer been occupied with the connection between contemporary art and cultural heritage, the role and place of the artist in society and the connection between craftsmanship and ideology. Due to Lárusson’s pioneering work as a performance artist in Iceland, he has been chosen by the artistic board of Sequences to be next years´ honorary artist. As such he will be invited to produce a performative installation that will be displayed at Gallery Kling & Bang in Reykjavik during the festival.
