Aleesa Cohene’s Yes, Angel consists of video clips laboriously edited from hundreds of Hollywood films from the 1980s and 90s. Cohene constructs composite characters that interact in a series of scenes across separate screens within the projection. They, together with an almost mythical narrator, tell a story of great loss, shame and finally, hope. The exhibition space includes a wall painting of a night sky reproduced from the projection and a scent inspired by the smell of blood, created by the artist. Cohene’s Yes, Angel immerses the viewer within a narrative of the traumatic traces left by the AIDS epidemic and with the possibility for personal and collective transformation.
